City recommendations falling outside the Euromonitor Top 100
Do assistants only recommend the same famous destinations?
Less than you would expect. Half of ChatGPT's city recommendations fell outside Euromonitor's Top 100, and 57.9% of DeepSeek's did.

This cuts against the usual claim. The concentration story is widely asserted and this measurement does not support its strong form: roughly half the recommended cities were off the list, and the correlation between how often a destination was recommended and its competitiveness score was not statistically significant for either model.

Method
Peer-reviewed, AI (MDPI), published 19 September 2025. 6,480 recommendations generated from 216 traveller personas against ChatGPT-4o and DeepSeek-V3, fresh session per persona and prompt, no retrieval tools. Scored against Euromonitor's Top 100 City Destinations 2024. Models without retrieval answer from training data, so this measures the model rather than an AI search product.
