Extra technical requirements to appear in Google's AI Overviews
December 2025 · Global
This is the single most useful sentence in the field, because it contradicts most of what is sold around it. Google's documentation says a page needs only to be indexed and eligible to show with a snippet, and goes further: you do not need to create machine-readable files, AI text files, or special schema.org markup. A good deal of GEO advice sells exactly those things.

Google Search Central, AI features documentation, last updated 10 December 2025. Verbatim: "You don't need to create new machine readable files, AI text files, or markup to appear in these features." It covers AI Overviews and AI Mode in Google Search, and says nothing about other assistants, which publish their own rules.
